A heated press conference exchange between Francis Ngannou and Jake Paul has ignited fresh talk of a potential blockbuster clash between the two combat sports stars.

What began as promotional duties ahead of an upcoming fight card quickly turned into a fiery war of words — with Ngannou branding Paul a “small boy” and the YouTuber-turned-boxer firing back with his own sharp insults.

The tense moment came during the kickoff press conference for the May 16 event headlined by Ronda Rousey’s comeback fight against Gina Carano.

Ngannou is scheduled to compete on the card as well, making his return to MMA against fellow former UFC fighter Philipe Lins. The event is being promoted by Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions and will air on Netflix.

But despite the focus being on the upcoming bouts, the spotlight quickly shifted toward a possible future showdown between Paul and Ngannou.

The rivalry stems from an attempted fight last year that never materialised.

Paul had tried to arrange a boxing match with Ngannou before eventually facing former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua instead. At the time, Ngannou declined the opportunity.

Now, however, the former UFC heavyweight champion appears far more interested in settling things inside the ring.

When asked about the possibility of facing Paul during the press conference, Ngannou didn’t hold back.

“No, I’m not interested in fighting Jake Paul,” Ngannou said to a question from a reporter in attendance. “I’m interested in beating his a**. Not fighting him.”

Paul — who was present at the press event in his role as promoter — quickly grabbed the microphone to respond.

The American insisted he had always been open to the fight and accused Ngannou of avoiding it previously. “I’m down. I’ve always been down,” Paul said. “You were the option before Anthony Joshua, and you ran like a duck. And I bet you didn’t think I would last longer than you did with Anthony, either. So, you just know that you get worked in boxing. And I would love to see it someday.”

Paul’s remark referenced the pair’s respective defeats to Joshua.

Ngannou stepped into the boxing ring against the British heavyweight in March 2024 but suffered a brutal knockout in the second round.

Paul also faced Joshua later, but lasted significantly longer before being stopped in the sixth round — a fight that left him with a broken jaw.

Despite the defeats, both fighters now have legitimate experience inside the boxing ring, adding an extra layer of intrigue to any potential matchup.

Ngannou made it clear that Paul’s continued comments are the reason he now wants the fight.

The Cameroonian powerhouse explained that when the bout was originally proposed, he simply had no interest in the idea.

But after hearing Paul repeatedly talk about him publicly, his stance has changed.

“You were just being a small boy, not understanding, being a little disrespectful, and that’s why I want to kick your a** now,” Ngannou said. “I really didn’t want to fight you, but now I want to beat you – so there’s a difference.”

The former UFC heavyweight champion then doubled down on his challenge. adding: “Let’s do it. That’s why I stand by the statement that I want to beat you up.”

With both fighters now openly calling for the bout, speculation has already begun about whether a fight between Ngannou and Paul could actually happen.

The two share a rare crossover appeal — one as a former UFC heavyweight champion who has already faced elite boxers like Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, and the other as one of the most polarising figures in combat sports promotion.

For now, however, both men have other business to take care of.

Ngannou will first return to MMA when he faces Philipe Lins on May 16, while Paul is looking to bounce back after his knockout defeat to Joshua in December 2025.

But judging by the fiery exchange between them, a showdown between Ngannou and Paul might just be inevitable.
