Conor McGregor has officially been banned from competing in the UFC for 18 months after violating the organisation’s anti-doping policy, Combat Sports Anti-Doping (CSAD) confirmed this week.
The news comes after McGregor touted a comeback to the MMA company at their anticipated UFC White House event.
However, now it has been announced that the Irish star, 37, missed three attempted biological sample collections within a 12-month period in 2024 — on 13 June, 19 September, and 20 September — each recorded as “whereabouts failures” under UFC’s Anti-Doping Policy (ADP).
McGregor’s suspension has been backdated to 20 September 2024, the date of his final missed test, meaning he will be ineligible to compete until 20 March 2026.
The sanction was reduced from the standard 24 months to 18 in recognition of McGregor’s cooperation and the context surrounding his injury recovery, per BBC Sports.
A statement shared by UFC revealed that McGregor “accepted responsibility, and provided detailed information that CSAD determined contributed to the missed tests.” The organisation added that although mitigating factors were taken into account, “accurate whereabouts filings and the ability to conduct unannounced testing are essential to the success of the UFC ADP.”
When Will Conor McGregor Be Allowed To Compete Again?
The ban means McGregor won’t be seen in the Octagon until March 2026 — nearly five years after his last professional fight. He last competed in July 2021, suffering a broken leg in his trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier, a defeat that marked his second consecutive loss to the American.
McGregor’s highly anticipated comeback fight against Michael Chandler, originally scheduled for UFC 303 in June 2024, was scrapped after he withdrew with a broken toe just weeks before the event.
Despite his time away from competition, McGregor has remained one of the sport’s most talked-about figures, continuing to generate headlines through his business ventures, political ambitions, and legal battles.
White House Fight Rumours Swirl
In typical McGregor fashion, the Dublin native made waves recently by claiming on social media that he had “signed to fight on the UFC White House card” — an event President Donald Trump has announced will be held on 14 June 2026, coinciding with his 80th birthday.
However, UFC president Dana White quickly dismissed those claims, telling reporters: “I made it clear that Conor wants to fight on that card, and you can clearly see Conor is very fired-up to fight on that card, but nothing is done yet. No fights are being negotiated with the White House.”
If McGregor serves out his ban in full, he would technically be eligible to fight again just three months before that White House event — timing that has only fuelled speculation about whether it could mark his long-awaited return.
CSAD confirmed that McGregor has already re-entered the UFC testing pool, submitting four samples in 2025. His eligibility to fight again will depend not only on the completion of his suspension but also on medical clearance following his leg and toe injuries.
Away from the cage, McGregor’s life has been anything but quiet. In November 2024, he was ordered by an Irish court to pay £206,000 in damages plus costs to Nikita Hand, who accused him of r*ping her in a Dublin hotel in 2018.
Ms Hand also announced plans in August 2024 to sue McGregor and two others, alleging they engaged in “malicious abuse of court processes.” McGregor has denied all allegations.
Earlier this year, the former champion ended his bid to run in the Irish presidential election, describing the nation’s eligibility rules as a “straitjacket.”
What’s Bext For McGregor?
With his ban set to expire in Spring 2026, McGregor faces a crucial crossroads. If he chooses to fight again, it would likely be one of the most anticipated comebacks in UFC history. But after nearly five years out and a series of injuries, it remains to be seen whether “The Notorious” can recapture the form that made him a two-division world champion and the sport’s biggest draw.
