A tragic gym accident has claimed the life of 55-year-old father, as surveillance cameras captured the moment a heavy barbell slipped from his hands and crashed onto his chest.
Robert Montenegro, who was a regular at the RW Academia gym in Olinda, near Recife on Brazil’s northeast coast, had been lifting weights when the bar suddenly fell, pinning him to the bench, the New Zealand Herald reports.
Fellow gymgoers rushed to help as the 55-year-old museum manager initially managed to sit up, but heartbreaking footage shows him collapsing to the ground seconds later.
Emergency services were called immediately, and Montenegro was rushed to hospital. Despite the efforts of doctors, reports say nothing could be done to save the “much-loved” father, who later succumbed to his injuries.
The Palacio dos Bonecos Gigantes museum, where Montenegro worked as president, confirmed his death in a statement shared alongside a photo and black ribbon tribute.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald Montenegro, our president and an indispensable figure in the history and construction of the Palacio dos Bonecos,” the announcement read, according to Mail Online.
Local police confirmed they had opened an investigation but concluded the incident was an accident.
RW Academia also issued a public statement on their social media channels expressing their condolences and defending the response of staff who were present when the accident occurred.
“It is with deep sadness and dismay that RW Academia expresses its solidarity with the passing of our student Ronald Jose Salvador,” the post read. “The entire team provided immediate assistance, promptly calling for specialised help. Despite all efforts, we received the news of his passing with immense sorrow.
“We extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, wishing them strength and comfort at this time of immeasurable grief. Ronald Jose Salvador will always be remembered with respect and affection by all who were part of his journey in our community.”

Footage from the gym has since circulated online, leaving many viewers shocked by how quickly the situation unfolded. Others highlighted the importance of safety measures during solo workouts.
“This is why it’s so important to have a spotter! Poor man, I feel so bad that happened to him,” one social media user commented. “Dang. Life changed in a matter of seconds,” another wrote.
A relative, who chose not to be identified, told Brazilian media that Montenegro was a dedicated gym-goer who exercised regularly to stay fit. However, they stressed that the workout should have been supervised and urged gyms to strengthen prevention measures so trainers do not allow people to lift alone.
For Montenegro’s colleagues and friends at the museum, his loss has left a deep void in a community that described him as both a leader and a beloved presence. Our thoughts go out to Montenegro’s family and loved ones at this time.
