Ronda Rousey isn’t just back — she looks dangerous again.
In a recent training clip shared to Instagram, the former UFC champion showed flashes of the explosive power that once defined an era, as she ramps up preparations for her long-awaited return against Gina Carano.
And if there were any doubts about how seriously she’s taking this comeback, they’re quickly disappearing.
Because this isn’t a nostalgia fight At least… not in Rousey’s eyes.
“This is the biggest fight in MMA right now,” she said at her recent face-off with Carano. “There are no two people in this sport with more international name recognition than me and Gina — except Conor [McGregor], but no one is going to sanction that. This isn’t a charity card. This isn’t a throwback, nostalgia card. This is the biggest fight in the sport right now, and it needed to happen now.”
The bout, set for May 16 at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, brings together two of the most recognisable names in women’s MMA — fighters who helped shape the sport long before it became mainstream.
Carano, 43, hasn’t fought since 2009. Rousey, 39, hasn’t competed since 2016.
And yet, the anticipation feels anything but dated.
“This is fate between us. We have been on a collision course ever since I sat on a couch watching her on TV, just in complete awe what this woman was doing,” Rousey said.
That respect runs deep. Before Rousey became a global superstar and forced the UFC to introduce women’s divisions, she was a fan — watching Carano rise as one of the sport’s earliest breakout stars. Now, years later, they’re finally meeting in what many believe to be a dream match.
Both fighters have taken vastly different paths since stepping away from competition, moving into entertainment and building lives outside the cage.
But neither ever fully closed the door on fighting.
For Carano, the return is something far more personal.
“We only get to live once, and this makes me feel so alive,” she said. “It’s pretty incredible and surreal to be here today. It’s healing. It’s exciting. It’s everything I could have hoped for. I didn’t know I needed this so bad.”
For Rousey, it’s about something unfinished.
“We both need to rewrite our own endings together,” she explained. “So I reached out to her, and it’s been such a journey to get here. So many obstacles. So many people tried to get between us. We went from barely knowing each other to being like, ‘You know what? We’re going to fight each other.’”
That journey hasn’t been straightforward.
Rousey has previously spoken about stepping away from MMA due to neurological issues, while Carano has dealt with her own medical challenges over the years. Nevertheless, Rousey’s recent training footage shows sharp, explosive movement and a clear focus as she pushes through fight camp – and fans in the comments section were certain fired up by the footage.
But it’s not just inside the gym where she’s making noise.
In a surprising move, she recently reappeared in professional wrestling at AEW’s Revolution pay-per-view, confronting Toni Storm following her match with Marina Shafir. The appearance raised eyebrows — particularly given Rousey’s previous criticism of the pro-wrestling industry and its fanbase.
Rousey has made it clear she sees this bout as part of a wider shift in the sport — even criticising the UFC’s structure and positioning the event, backed by Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions, as a genuine alternative.
“Now it’s become about changing the entire landscape of the sport and challenging the monolith that the UFC has become,” she said. “Of course, I just wanted to do something fun. I don’t have to change the world, but that’s the way that we do it. I’m so happy that we’re here, and I’m so grateful that Gina trusted me.”
That ambition adds another layer to what is already one of the most unusual — and intriguing — matchups in recent MMA history.
If Rousey’s latest training footage is anything to go by, she’s not coming back to ease into it. She’s coming back to make a statement.
