Carlos Ray ‘Chuck’ Norris — the martial artist, actor, and cultural icon whose name became synonymous with strength — has died at the age of 86.

His family confirmed the news in a statement shared to social media on March 20, revealing that he passed away the previous morning following a reported medical emergency in Hawaii. Further details surrounding his death have not been disclosed.

“It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning,” the family’s statement read. “While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace.”

“To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family,” they added. “He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. Through his work, discipline, and kindness, he inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives.”

They continued: “He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. Through his work, discipline, and kindness, he inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives.

“While our hearts are broken, we are deeply grateful for the life he lived and for the unforgettable moments we were blessed to share with him. The love and support he received from fans around the world meant so much to him, and our family is truly thankful for it. To him, you were not just fans, you were his friends.

“We know many of you had heard about his recent hospitalization, and we are truly grateful for the prayers and support you sent his way.”

“As we grieve this loss, we kindly ask for privacy for our family during this time,” the family added. “Thank you for loving him with us. With love, The Norris Family.”

His passing comes just days after he celebrated his 86th birthday, even sharing a video of himself sparring with a trainer — a reminder of the energy and discipline that defined his life.

“I don’t age. I level up. I’m 86 today! Nothing like some playful action on a sunny day to make you feel young,” the post was captioned.

Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, his journey to global fame began far from Hollywood.

After serving in the United States Air Force, Norris discovered martial arts while stationed in South Korea — a path that would ultimately shape his life. What followed was one of the most dominant careers in combat sports history.

He compiled an extraordinary fight record, winning the National Karate Championships in 1966 before claiming the world middleweight title the following year — the first of six consecutive world titles. By the time he retired from competition in 1974, he was an undefeated full-contact middleweight champion and had achieved elite black belt status across multiple disciplines, including karate, taekwondo, jiu-jitsu, and judo.

His reputation inside the dojo soon opened doors in Hollywood.

A friendship with Bruce Lee led to his breakout role in The Way of the Dragon in 1972 — a now-iconic showdown that remains one of the most famous fight scenes in cinema history.

From there, Norris built a career as one of the defining action stars of the 1980s, leading films such as Missing in Action, Invasion, U.S.A., and The Delta Force.

His on-screen persona was clear — a man of action who only fought when necessary. He is quoted as once saying: “I don’t initiate violence, I retaliate.”

That identity carried through into his later work, most notably in the long-running television series Walker, Texas Ranger, which cemented his place as a household name across generations.

Beyond film and television, Norris became something even rarer — a cultural phenomenon.

The “Chuck Norris Facts” meme turned him into an internet legend, with exaggerated jokes about his strength and invincibility spreading worldwide. Rather than shy away from it, he embraced it — even sharing his favourites, including: “Before the Boogeyman goes to sleep, he checks his closet for Chuck Norris.”

Despite the humour, the core of his legacy remained grounded in discipline, faith, and personal development.

He founded martial arts systems, launched youth programmes aimed at steering children away from drugs and violence, and authored books focused on strength — both physical and mental.

In later years, he also became increasingly vocal about his political beliefs, while continuing to expand his influence beyond entertainment.

But at the centre of it all was family.

The Norris family’s statement made clear just how much that meant to him — and how much the support of his fans meant in return.

As tributes begin to pour in from across the world, one thing is certain: Chuck Norris wasn’t just a star of his era — he defined it.

Our thoughts go out to Norris’ family, friends, and many fans at this time.
