John Fury has revealed exactly what was said during the heated phone call with Eddie Hall that ultimately helped set up Tommy Fury’s shock boxing clash with the former World’s Strongest Man.
The unexpected crossover fight was already raising eyebrows the moment it was announced, with fans stunned to see Hall preparing to share the ring with a professional boxer from one of the most famous fighting families in the world.
But according to Fury Sr, the seeds for the fight were planted long before contracts were signed.
Tommy Fury and Eddie Hall had previously been on good terms, but tensions escalated after Hall began making comments that John Fury clearly didn’t appreciate. And once the Fury patriarch got involved, things quickly spiralled.
Speaking to Fred Talks Fighting, Fury explained how the situation unfolded and admitted he may have played a major role in destroying the pair’s friendship.
“You’ve got to give Eddie Hall props, because he isn’t a fighter and he knows what could happen to him,” Fury said. “Tommy and Eddie get on well, but I can blame myself for ruining that friendship. They used to get on well together, but then he started getting sarcastic.
“I’m not afraid of nobody. I said to him ‘don’t insult my son, because if you do I’ll punch you straight into the mouth’.”
That was only the beginning.
Fury then detailed how the conversation intensified after Hall allegedly began talking up his chances against both Tommy and Tyson Fury.
“And he started saying ‘I can do this and I can do that to him and Tyson’,” he said. “I said you can do f*** all my old pal. When you are talking about world champions, it’s boxing, you can’t do nothing.
“No disrespect to them, what have they got cardio wise? Nothing.”
Given John Fury’s history of explosive confrontations during fight weeks, there’s every chance tensions could boil over again once the promotion ramps up closer to the event.
The matchup itself has already become one of the most talked-about crossover fights in recent memory purely because of how unlikely it feels on paper.
Tommy Fury arrives with the boxing pedigree, experience, and family name. Hall, meanwhile, enters as one of the strongest men on the planet, carrying sheer size and power that few opponents could realistically match.
It’s precisely that contrast that has made the bout such a huge talking point online.
Hall is still relatively inexperienced in boxing terms and will head into the contest with only limited ring experience behind him. But the strongman believes fans will see a completely different version of him compared to previous appearances.
Speaking to talkSPORT.com, Hall explained that injuries heavily affected his preparation for his fight against Hafthor Bjornsson and says those limitations won’t exist this time around.
“It will be a lot different to that fight,” Hall explained. “I went into the Thor fight while throwing nothing but right hands, because I couldn’t throw my left hand.
“So yeah, I’m an orthodox fighter and you won’t see the southpaw stance because my arm is fixed this time. I will be a lot more technical, better defence and a lot more aggression.
“It will be a lot more improved all around. I hope Tommy Fury is the first of the Fury’s I can fight if I beat him.”
That final line will likely do little to calm the Fury camp.
For Hall, though, the fight represents far more than just a novelty crossover event. Beating Tommy Fury would instantly become the biggest result of his combat sports career and potentially open the door to even bigger spectacle fights in the future.
For Tommy Fury, the pressure looks very different.
The younger Fury has spent years trying to establish credibility away from reality television fame and social media boxing discourse. Losing to Hall would be viewed as a seismic upset given the gulf in boxing experience between the two men.
That’s what makes the fight so commercially intriguing.
Hall brings an enormous fanbase from the worlds of Strongman, fitness, and internet entertainment. Tommy Fury carries mainstream recognition and the backing of the Fury name. Together, it creates the kind of crossover spectacle modern fight fans can’t stop talking about.
And if John Fury is already threatening to “punch” people before fight week has even properly begun, the build-up could become just as chaotic as the fight itself.
