UPDATE – 26/11/2015:
Authorities searching for missing high school football coach Travis Turner have now confirmed that he is a wanted man facing serious charges.
As reported by BBC News, 46-year-old Turner – of Appalachia, Virginia – is wanted on charges of possessing child sexual abuse material and using a computer to solicit a minor, police in Virginia said on Tuesday.
Virginia State Police revealed in a statement over the weekend that they paid a visit to Turner’s home last Thursday as part of an investigation but were told he wasn’t there. In a previous statement, authorities said the visit was NOT to arrest him.
In the days since, drones and rescue teams have been deployed in an effort to locate Turner.
Now, a spokesperson for the police department has stated: “VSP’s main priority is locating Turner safely; he is now considered a fugitive.” Additionally, there are now 10 warrants for his arrest.
Additional charges against the football coach are pending, police said.
Turner is a physical education teacher and head football coach at Union High School in Wise County public school district in Virginia, according to the school’s website.
The school district revealed to US media outlets that it was aware of the charges against a “staff member”, adding that the employee had been placed on administrative leave. They did not identify the employee.
ORIGINAL – 25/11/2025:
The disappearance of Virginia high school football coach Travis Turner has taken another turn, as new details emerge about an investigation linked to the school district he worked for — and the emotional plea from his wife for his safe return.
Turner, 46, the head coach of Union High School in Big Stone Gap, vanished late last week during what should have been one of the proudest stretches of his career: an undefeated season.
As reported by the New York Post, Virginia State Police say he was last seen on Thursday, with authorities subsequently launching an extensive search effort involving drones, K-9s, and search and rescue teams.
His wife, Leslie Caudill Turner, addressed the growing concern in a now-deleted Facebook post on Friday night, writing, “I just wanted to get on here for a second to clear up something, as of right now, 10:25PM on Friday night, Travis is missing, & that’s all we know.”
She continued: “We love him & need him here with us. Thank you to everyone who has reached out with love & support. It means more than you know. Just keep praying that he comes home.”
Police Investigation and School Action
According to police, officers were dispatched to Turner’s home in Appalachia, Virginia, on Thursday evening as part of the “early stages of an investigation.” Authorities clarified the visit was “not to arrest [Turner],” but by the time they arrived, he was already gone.

“While in transit, the agents were informed that Turner was no longer at the location,” police said in a statement, per The NY Post.
The nature of the investigation remains unclear, but on the same day, Wise County Public Schools, which oversees Union High, announced that a staff member had been placed on administrative leave with pay amid an external review.
In a statement, the district said: “A staff member has been placed on administrative leave with pay while an external agency reviews an allegation that was reported to the division. This is standard procedure and not a determination of wrongdoing. This situation also involves an active law-enforcement matter, and the division cannot comment further.”
Neither the school district nor police have confirmed whether Turner was the staff member placed on leave, or whether the two situations are connected.
A Community Left Searching
The small town of Big Stone Gap, nestled in Virginia’s Appalachian region, has been left stunned by Turner’s disappearance. For many in the community, Turner wasn’t just a coach — he was a local figurehead guiding a team that had captured the region’s attention with its unbeaten run.
Photos shared by Leslie Turner show the couple and their family at local games and community events, often clad in Union Bears gear. Turner himself was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and sweatpants when he went missing.

At Phil Robbins Field, where the Bears play their home games, recent crowds have been standing room only — but the atmosphere has turned somber. The team continues to compete under assistant coach Jay Edwards, who has taken over head coaching duties as the search continues.
Turner’s disappearance remains an active missing-person case. As of Monday, Virginia State Police confirmed that he was still listed as missing in their database, adding: “Virginia State Police has utilized a number of assets, including search and rescue teams, drones and K-9s, to assist in the search, and hopefully, locate Turner safely. At this time, Turner has not been located. The investigation remains ongoing.”
A Tight-Knit Town Waiting For Answers
Union High’s undefeated season — once a point of celebration — now feels overshadowed by uncertainty and rumors. When approached by the media, Newsweek reports that Superintendent Mike Goforth simply said: “I can’t discuss any personnel matters.”
Parents, players, and community members have continued to share posts online regarding the coach’s disappearance.
The investigation continues as both law enforcement and the community search for answers.
