Jake Paul has issued another message of condolence after the two men killed in the tragic car crash involving Anthony Joshua were identified as close friends and team members of the former world heavyweight champion.
The British-Nigerian boxer, 36, was left with minor injuries after the vehicle he was travelling in collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Nigeria on Monday morning.
Authorities confirmed that two people died in the crash — now identified as Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele — both described as members of Joshua’s close inner circle, BBC News has reported.
According to a statement released by Matchroom Boxing and 258 BXG, Ayodele was Joshua’s personal trainer, while Ghami worked as his sport and exercise rehabilitation coach.
The full statement read: “Anthony Joshua was involved in a road traffic accident in Lagos, Nigeria, earlier today.
“With profound sadness it has been confirmed that two close friends and team members Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele have tragically passed away.
“Matchroom Boxing and 258 BXG can confirm that Anthony sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to hospital for checks and treatment. He is in a stable condition and will remain there for observation.
“Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families and friends of all those affected – and we ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time. No further comment will be made at this time.”
Jake Paul Pays Tribute To Ghami And Ayodele
Jake Paul, who faced Joshua in the ring earlier this year, was among the first public figures to respond to the heartbreaking update.
The YouTuber-turned-boxer wrote on X: “RIP Sina Ghami and Kevin ‘Latif / Latz’ Ayodele. My thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends and AJ.”
Earlier, Paul had posted: “Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.”
His promotional company, MVP – Most Valuable Promotions, added: “The MVP family is thinking of and praying for everyone that has been impacted by today’s car accident in Nigeria. Our prayers and condolences go out to all.”
The Ogun State Government has confirmed Joshua remains in a stable condition after hospital treatment.
A joint statement with the Lagos State Government said: “Following comprehensive clinical assessments, doctors have confirmed that both patients [Joshua and a second passenger] are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time.
A full medical team has been assembled and will continue to monitor them closely.”
Officials confirmed that Joshua is “conscious” and “has been in communication with his family,” adding that both state governments are “closely monitoring the situation” to ensure the boxer receives the best possible care.
Earlier on Monday, authorities confirmed the damaged vehicle had been evacuated and that a full investigation into the crash was underway.
“While the severely damaged vehicle has been evacuated to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division (MTD) office, efforts are ongoing to tow the truck involved to the same location to facilitate a comprehensive investigation,” Ogun officials said.
What Happened?
The crash occurred at around 11:00AM local time as Joshua and four other men travelled along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway — one of Nigeria’s busiest and most dangerous roads.
The Federal Road Safety Corps said the Lexus Jeep was believed to have been overtaking at speed before colliding with a broken-down truck.
Footage shared on social media appeared to show bystanders helping Joshua from the wreckage. Police confirmed he suffered minor injuries but was “fine.”
BBC News journalist Mayeni Jones noted that the expressway has previously been described as “one of Nigeria’s deadliest roads” by local media.
Joshua was reportedly travelling to visit family in Sagamu, Ogun State, when the crash occurred. A relative told the BBC the family was “in shock,” adding that the boxer “normally visits Nigeria around the new year.”
News of the deaths of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele has sent shockwaves through the boxing community. Tributes have poured in from fans, colleagues, and promoters, remembering the pair for their dedication and close friendship with Joshua.
As investigations continue, officials in Ogun and Lagos States say their focus remains on supporting the families of the victims and ensuring Joshua’s full recovery.
Our thoughts go out to everyone impacted by this tragedy.
