A brutal finish at UFC Fight Night 271 in Seattle has sparked widespread concern after Maycee Barber was left unconscious in the cage following a frightening first-round stoppage against Alexa Grasso.

The women’s flyweight co-main event was already one of the most anticipated fights on the card, but the ending quickly became the dominant talking point of the night for all the wrong reasons.

Barber, 27, came into the bout riding a seven-fight win streak and looking to avenge an earlier defeat to Grasso. Instead, she suffered one of the most alarming stoppages seen in women’s MMA in recent memory.

Midway through the opening round, Grasso landed a vicious left hand that appeared to switch Barber’s lights off instantly. As Barber’s legs buckled and she dropped to the canvas, Grasso immediately followed up on the ground and locked in a choke.

The sequence unfolded so quickly that referee Mike Beltran had to intervene almost immediately, jumping in to stop the fight as Barber lay in serious trouble.

According to reports from Seattle, Barber appeared to be unconscious before she even hit the floor. What made the scene even more unsettling was what happened after the stoppage. In clips that rapidly spread online, Barber could be seen instinctively grabbing at the referee as he separated the fighters and tried to settle her on the canvas.

She was then laid flat on her back in the middle of the cage, arms spread out, eyes open, while medics rushed in to help.

The images immediately triggered concern among fans watching at home and inside the arena.

One fan wrote on X: “That is one of the craziest finishes i’ve seen in WMMA.”

Another said: “Holy f*** bro Alexa Grasso just took the soul of Maycee Barber.”

A third added: “Definitely took years off her life. She was out with her eyes open for like 45 seconds.”

Others were even more shaken by the replay, with one X user adding: “Literally almost took her life away that’s a killer right there.”

“That’s horrendous,” another simply said, with a different viewer admitting: “THIS IS A SPOOKY A** KO. I literally checked to make sure Barber was breathing that’s how scary that was.”

Commentary during the sequence reflected the same disbelief. Daniel Cormier said: “She didn’t need a choke, she was out. That’s crazy.”

Dominick Cruz then added: “And then sits down out of respect, that’s sportsmanship right there. That’s martial arts.”

As Barber slowly began to recover, Cruz said: “She’s okay,” before Cormier followed with: “She’s fine.”

Thankfully, Barber was eventually able to get back to her feet and remain in the cage for the official announcement before leaving under her own power. For Grasso, it was a huge statement victory and an important return to form.

Following the fight, she said: “I’m back. Alexa without injuries is different. I’m so happy.”

She also made clear that while her striking got the finish started, the submission element had been a major focus in camp.

“Of course my striking is always the first weapon, but I was training so hard to get a finish by submission because I trained jiu-jitsu a lot. I wanted the finish.”

The victory was a significant one for the former champion. After winning UFC gold in 2023 against Valentina Shevchenko, drawing their rematch, and then losing the trilogy bout in September 2024, Grasso had also come up short against Natalia Silva in May 2025. This win over Barber put her back in the spotlight in emphatic fashion.

Barber’s record now stands at 15-3, with the defeat ending her seven-fight winning run. It was also her first loss since February, which had also come against Grasso.

Although Grasso’s performance earned her a $100,000 (£75,000) performance of the night bonus, much of the discussion afterwards centred on Barber’s condition and just how disturbing the finish looked in real time and on replay.

It was the kind of ending that instantly takes over the sport online — not because of the stakes, but because of how long the image lingers after the fight is over.

And for many watching, Barber lying motionless with her eyes open was exactly that kind of image.
