Joseph Baena Calls Dad Arnold Schwarzenegger The ‘Best Training Partner’: ‘He Makes Sure That I Don’t Slack Off’

There are training partners — and then there’s having one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time standing beside you, making sure every rep counts.

For Joseph Baena, that reality isn’t a motivational quote — it’s his everyday routine. And as his rise in the bodybuilding world continues, it’s becoming increasingly clear just how much influence his father, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has had on the journey.

Baena’s path into fitness didn’t begin with instant success or natural dominance. Instead, it was sparked by curiosity during his college years — and a simple but iconic gift from his dad.

“My dad gave me the bodybuilding encyclopedia,” Baena told GQ.

That moment proved to be a turning point. What started as flicking through pages quickly became something deeper — an obsession with understanding how the body works and how to improve it.

“I was flipping through that, trying to learn how to grow the biceps, and I fell in love with weightlifting,” he continued. “I fell in love with eating healthy. I fell in love with learning about the body and how it reacts to training, and I became very passionate about it.”

From there, the foundation was set — but the real difference came when theory turned into practice.

Training alongside Schwarzenegger at Gold’s Gym Venice Beach — a venue synonymous with bodybuilding history — is about as intense as it gets. And according to Baena, his father doesn’t take it easy on him.

“He’s the best training partner. I don’t know what to say,” he said.

It’s a simple statement, but one that carries weight. Because behind it is a level of accountability most athletes never experience.

“He pushes me. He makes sure that I don’t slack off in the gym. When the carbs are low and the calories are low and I start getting tired, he pumps me up,” he added.

That relentless push appears to be paying off.

Baena recently stepped onto the competitive stage and made an immediate impact, announcing on Instagram that he secured first place in multiple categories at the NPC Natural Colorado State competition. Among his wins were the Men’s Open Body Heavy Weight Class, Men’s Classic Physique True Novice, and Men’s Class Physique Novice — a statement debut by any standard.

“Mission Accomplished,” he wrote alongside several photos of himself flexing onstage during his bodybuilding debut.

And the momentum didn’t stop there. On April 4, he was also crowned the INBA Iron Gladiator classic physique champion, adding another title to his growing list of achievements.

It’s a trajectory that inevitably draws comparisons to his father’s legendary career. Schwarzenegger’s dominance in the sport remains unmatched in many respects, with seven Mr. Olympia titles and five Mr. Universe wins before stepping away from competition in 1980.

But Baena’s journey hasn’t been a carbon copy — far from it.

Long before stepping on stage, he faced setbacks that shaped his approach to fitness. He previously revealed that he was “chubby” during high school and struggled to keep up athletically.

It was a tough reality, but one that ultimately redirected him toward something that would change his life.

“Swim didn’t have tryouts thankfully and completely changed my life forever,” he added. “That was my introduction to Fitness and training.”

That early turning point laid the groundwork for everything that followed — from discovering weightlifting to eventually stepping into competitive bodybuilding with confidence.

Now, with his father guiding him not just as a mentor but as a hands-on training partner, Baena is carving out his own identity in the sport. The name might be familiar, but the work is entirely his own — built rep by rep, session by session.

And if his recent results are anything to go by, this is only the beginning.
