After years of circling, delays, and what-ifs, British boxing’s biggest rivalry is finally breaking through the noise.

This time, it’s not rumours. It’s not negotiations. It’s not another near miss. It’s happening.

The long-awaited heavyweight collision between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua has officially been locked in for 2026, setting the stage for one of the most significant fights in the sport’s modern history.

The confirmation came in emphatic fashion from promoter Eddie Hearn, who took to social media with a message that instantly sent shockwaves through the boxing world: “Signed, sealed and delivered! AJ vs Fury is on!”

For a fight that has spent the better part of a decade slipping through the cracks, those words carry serious weight.

Hearn didn’t hold back on the scale of what’s been achieved either, adding: “The biggest piece of business we’ve ever done, but more importantly, the one we’ve always wanted. Biggest year of AJ’s career coming up, the comeback is on.”

Before the blockbuster showdown arrives, Joshua will first step back into the ring on July 25 against Kristian Prenga in what’s being billed as a tune-up bout. It’s a necessary checkpoint ahead of the defining clash with Fury, one that will bring the curtain up on a new chapter in his career.

Fury, meanwhile, has wasted no time in reigniting the rivalry. Fresh off a points victory over Arslanbek Makhmudov at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he made his intentions crystal clear by calling out Joshua and revealing he had already signed for the fight.

Momentum quickly followed.

Ring Magazine added further fuel by declaring the bout a “done deal,” confirming it is expected to land in Q4 of 2026. November has already been floated as a target, aligning with earlier comments from Hearn as plans begin to solidify.

For fans, it’s a moment that has been a long time coming.

Because this isn’t just another big fight — it’s the fight that has consistently slipped away.

For nearly ten years, Joshua and Fury have moved in parallel, their careers intertwined without ever colliding. When Fury shocked the world by defeating Wladimir Klitschko to become heavyweight champion, Joshua was still rising. By the time Joshua captured his first world title in 2016, Fury had stepped away from the sport.

Timing, more than anything, kept them apart.

Fury returned and reclaimed his place at the top by beating Deontay Wilder, while Joshua unified the division with the IBF, WBA and WBO belts. An undisputed clash seemed inevitable.

It never came.

Instead, Fury completed a trilogy with Wilder, and Joshua suffered a major setback against Oleksandr Usyk — a fighter who would later also defeat Fury before his brief retirement at the start of last year.

Even now, the road to this fight hasn’t been straightforward.

Joshua’s return to full training followed a deeply difficult period after a serious accident that saw two of his close friends and team members lose their lives. It’s a backdrop that adds emotional weight to what is already a defining stretch of his career.

He now finds himself back in camp — notably working alongside former rival Usyk — with renewed focus and a clear target ahead.

And with Fury back, active, and calling his name, the timing has finally aligned.

There is still one final hurdle in Joshua’s path before the mega-fight becomes reality. Prenga awaits in July, a fight that must be navigated cleanly to keep everything on track.

But beyond that, nothing stands in the way.

The exact date and location are still to be confirmed, though expectations are already building around a major stadium event in the UK — a fitting stage for a fight of this magnitude.

Because when it comes to British boxing, it doesn’t get bigger than this.
