What should have been a routine sprint to the line turned into complete chaos in Germany after a spectator on a mobility scooter rolled directly into the path of a speeding peloton — triggering a sickening chain-reaction crash.

The frightening incident unfolded during the final stage of the Saarland Trofeo, one of the biggest junior races on the calendar, and the footage has already spread rapidly online for all the wrong reasons.

Video from the roadside shows a tightly packed stream of riders tearing through the course at speed as fans lined the barriers.

Then, in a split second, everything changed.

An elderly woman on a mobility scooter slowly edged away from the crowd and onto the racecourse just as the pack approached.

One Danish rider somehow managed to avoid her at the very last moment, swerving clear by inches.

But the rider directly behind had no chance.

Dutch cyclist Paul Vriesman slammed straight into the scooter, launching himself over his handlebars in a brutal front flip before crashing hard onto the tarmac. The impact instantly caused carnage behind him, with multiple riders piling into the wreckage and hitting the ground in a heap.

In the aftermath, several young riders could be seen sprawled across the road in visible shock as others raced past, continuing toward the finish line.

For Vriesman, the timing of the crash made it even more painful.

The Dutch rider had only just returned to competition after spending months in rehab and was hoping to build momentum again.

After the race, he revealed he had escaped major injury despite the violent impact.

“Nasty crash but it looks like I got away with it relatively well and with no major injuries,” Vriesman said, per ABC News. “Not the way I was hoping to finish my first week back to racing after a few months of rehab though.

“I made some big steps this week towards coming back to my old form. Sad to have to DNF this Saarland Trofeo this way due to an old lady who was just living in her own world.”

The Saarland Trofeo remains one of the most important junior stage races in Europe and forms part of the UCI Junior Nations Cup, often giving fans an early glimpse at cycling’s next generation of stars.

This year, Australian rider Alistair Forsyth claimed victory on the final stage, while Norway’s Sindre Orholm-Lønseth secured the overall title after a strong week of racing, per The Sun.

The crash has also reignited conversations around crowd control in cycling, a sport that has repeatedly seen races disrupted by spectators stepping too close to the action.
