Eddie Hall has shared his honest views on modern society, claiming people have become “too sensitive” while discussing parenting, work ethic and why he believes younger generations are being rewarded too easily.
The former World’s Strongest Man appeared on Alhan FM’s YouTube show, where the pair covered everything from Hall’s rise to the top of Strongman, his struggles with addiction and depression, life after retirement, and his thoughts on raising children in today’s world.
The conversation eventually turned towards modern parenting and what Hall believes are some of the biggest issues facing society today.
Speaking about his own son, Hall explained that he and his partner take different approaches when it comes to discipline.
“I’m very hard on my son and then the missus is very, very soft on him. It’s a good dynamic. I think that’s a good dynamic as long as you don’t override each other. So when I’m giving him the drill, if she comes in and saves it, it ruins it,” he said.
Hall then questioned what he described as “soft parenting”, suggesting he worries about the long-term effects.
“Sometimes a good stern word from a parent can be that turn of the key,” he said.
He continued by explaining why he believes constantly doing everything for children can create unrealistic expectations later in life.
“I see all this soft parenting s*** online nowadays and it worries me, man,” he said.
“I honestly think a very mothered boy, and someone who’s very, very protective and has everything done for them – the washing done, the food for them and everything – I think you’re setting that person up for failure. Not just failure, but a narcissist, because then they expect everything in life to be handed to them,” he said.
Hall argued that this mindset extends far beyond parenting.
“That, in my opinion, is the problem with today’s society. Everyone’s waited on. ‘Oh, are your feelings alright?’ Everything’s so sensitive,” he said.
He continued by suggesting that dealing with setbacks is simply part of everyday life.
“You’re going to go online and see people say s*** you don’t like. You’re going to go to a restaurant, your food’s not going to be cooked properly. You’re going to be given Fanta when you asked for Coke. It’s like… crack on,” he said.
“People are melting these days over the small stuff,” he added.
Hall also believes entitlement has become increasingly common.
“Snowflake society… it’s real life though, isn’t it? You do see it,” he said.
“People are entitled nowadays. Everyone must think the same. There’s so many things wrong with today’s society. One of the big problems is everyone’s too f***ing morbid and sensitive,” he said.
The former Strongman also believes modern finance has changed people’s attitudes towards success, arguing that expensive lifestyles have become too accessible.
“Back in my day, if you wanted a nice car, you’d have to work your f***ing dick off to buy a car for like £1,000 or £1,500,” he said.
“Whereas nowadays, a 17-year-old can walk into Mercedes and get a £40,000 car on finance. They’ve had this massive reward and they’ve done f*** all for it. It’s setting them up for failure for the rest of their life,” he said.
Hall contrasted that with his own experience after turning 18.
“When I was 18, I bought my first house the day I was 18,” he said.
Rather than spending money on luxury cars, Hall said he prioritised property.
“I’d rather buy a house, and I drove around in a s*** £1,000 car. I bought a house at 18. I bought my second house at 19 and so on and so on. I always drove s*** cars,” he said.
He explained that the long-term approach eventually allowed him to enjoy the rewards later.
“It wasn’t until I was about 24 or 25 that I started buying nice cars and doing well for myself. Now I can go and buy a f***ing tank, but it’s because of that forward thinking. I always thought for the future and didn’t spunk all my money up the wall as soon as it came into the bank,” he said.
Hall finished with one final piece of advice for younger people trying to build wealth.
“Drive a smart car, act your wage… and get stacking,” he said.
