Eddie Hall knows a thing or two about shifting serious weight, and it appears his son Max is making impressive progress of his own in the gym.
Training alongside his father and coach, the youngster successfully pulled a new deadlift personal best of 180kg – around 400lb – while still just 13 years old.
The milestone came during a back session which initially began like any other training day before attention quickly turned towards the deadlift.
At the beginning of the session, Max revealed that attempting a new PB was already on the agenda.
“Yeah. Anyways, I think we’re going to go for PB on my deadlift today. What do you think, Dad?”
Eddie was immediately on board.
“PB? Yeah. So, your PB is 170? Yeah. Should we go for 180?”
That represented a 10kg jump from Max’s previous best, but there was another detail which made the attempted lift particularly notable.
Max is still 13 and is due to turn 14 the following week.
Eddie said: “So, we’re going to go for a PB 180 kilo before you’re 14. I’ll be good. Okay. It will be good.”
With the target established, there was no rushing straight towards the heaviest bar.
Max first worked through his warm-up before gradually moving into his deadlift singles, with Eddie keeping a close eye on his technique and the speed of each repetition.
As the weights increased, the feedback from his dad remained positive.
“Speed rep. Well done. Lovely. Okay, it’s looking good.”
Another single followed, with Eddie instructing him: “Nice easy single again, mate.”
That lift also went smoothly, leaving only the main event.
Four wheels.
180kg.
A new personal best waiting on the bar.
Eddie announced: “That was good, mate. They are the max four wheels, 180 kilos.”
Despite the significance of the attempt, the atmosphere remained encouraging rather than overly serious. Max had already successfully worked his way through the build-up, and now he simply needed to finish the job.
Max approached the bar and prepared for the attempt as those around him continued to offer encouragement.
Then came the final instruction.
“Perfect, mate. That perfect. All lined up, mate. Let’s go.”
Max began the pull.
The 180kg left the floor and continued upwards as Eddie urged him through the repetition.
There was no stopping there. Max completed the lift and secured his new personal best.
The reaction immediately afterwards perhaps said just as much about the performance as the number itself.
Eddie congratulated his son as the successful attempt sank in.
“Good job, buddy. [laughter] You all right, mate? Yeah.”
Max’s assessment was considerably more understated: “It’s pretty easy.”
That response prompted laughter, but Eddie appeared to agree with the verdict after watching the lift.
“Yeah, [laughter] it looked relatively easy. There’s definitely more there, isn’t it?”
For now, however, 180kg was enough.
Max had entered the session with a 170kg personal best and walked away having added another 10kg to it before his 14th birthday.
