The Baltimore Ravens’ season opener against the Buffalo Bills already had enough drama on the field — but a sideline incident involving quarterback Lamar Jackson and an overzealous fan stole just as many headlines.
On Sunday night at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, Jackson shoved a fan who had slapped both him and teammate DeAndre Hopkins during a third-quarter celebration.
The moment unfolded after Jackson connected with Hopkins on a spectacular 29-yard touchdown pass, which the receiver hauled in one-handed to put Baltimore ahead 34-19 with just over a minute left in the third quarter. As the pair celebrated near the stands, cameras caught a fan in a red Bills jersey reaching over the barrier and striking Hopkins on the helmet before doing the same to Jackson.

Speaking after the game, Jackson admitted his emotions got the better of him.
“He slapped me,” Jackson said. “He was steadily talking. So, I forgot where I was.”
The quarterback continued: “You’ve got to think in those situations. You’ve got security out there. Let security handle it. But I just let my emotion get the best of me. Hopefully, it’ll never happen again.”
The fan was ejected from the stadium.
NBC’s broadcast highlighted the incident, with play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico noting the fan “wasn’t celebrating at all” when he struck both Hopkins and Jackson.
Despite the shove, no penalty was assessed against Jackson on the field. The NFL has not yet commented on whether disciplinary action could follow.
In the locker room, Jackson suggested alcohol may have been a factor in the fan’s behavior. “If I remembered [what he said], I would have told y’all,” Jackson said, per USA Today. “He probably had a couple of beers.”
The two-time MVP also emphasized that the incident would not change how he interacts with supporters in future celebrations.
“I’ve never seen our fans do that,” Jackson said, per ESPN. “So, I’ll probably do it again when we score a touchdown. It’s not nothing against the fans. I’m just celebrating when my teammates get a touchdown.”
The altercation capped a night of frustration for the Ravens. Despite holding a 15-point lead after Hopkins’ touchdown, Baltimore collapsed in the fourth quarter as the Bills stormed back with 16 unanswered points, eventually winning 41-40.
