There are strong people, and then there are individuals who make even the most ridiculous feats of strength look like an ordinary day in the gym.
Russian powerhouse Andrey Smaev certainly belongs in the latter category, having demonstrated his extraordinary upper-body strength with a staggering bench press performance.
The muscular giant, who has earned the nickname the “Soviet Experiment,” was filmed bench pressing an astonishing 240kg (530lbs) for 10 repetitions.
To put that into perspective, lifting 240kg for a single repetition would represent an incredible achievement for most experienced gym-goers.
Yet Smaev managed to complete 10 reps with the enormous weight, displaying the sort of strength that has made him such an eye-catching figure in the fitness world.
And perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the footage is just how comfortable the Russian appears while moving such a substantial load.
Smaev is certainly not your average gym enthusiast.
The Russian has developed an extraordinary physique, with his enormous arms and forearms being among his most recognisable physical features.
His sheer muscularity has helped him earn comparisons to something created in a laboratory, rather than someone who has developed his physique through conventional training.
It’s a fitting description for an athlete whose physical appearance is almost as impressive as the weights he manages to lift.
Known for his involvement in street lifting, Smaev represents a discipline of strength training that places considerable emphasis on developing exceptional upper-body power.
Street lifting is closely associated with weighted bodyweight exercises, particularly pull-ups and dips, making Smaev’s enormous bench press performance another striking demonstration of his capabilities.
While traditional powerlifting revolves around the squat, bench press and deadlift, street lifting places a different emphasis on strength.
That makes Smaev’s ability to handle such an enormous weight on the bench press particularly noteworthy.
The bench press itself is one of the most recognisable exercises in strength training, used by everyone from casual gym members to elite strength athletes.
However, the difference between an ordinary gym session and what Smaev is capable of producing is considerable.
Moving 240kg requires exceptional strength, but repeating the movement 10 times adds another level of difficulty.
It’s not simply a demonstration of his ability to lift an enormous weight once, but also his capacity to perform multiple repetitions under a substantial load.
And given the Russian’s remarkable physique, it’s perhaps unsurprising that his strength is equally extraordinary.
For most people, putting four or five plates on either side of a barbell would be difficult to comprehend, let alone attempting multiple repetitions.
But for Smaev, 240kg appears to be a weight he can handle with remarkable confidence.
His latest display is another reminder of why the “Soviet Experiment” nickname seems so appropriate.
And while many gym-goers spend years working towards a respectable bench press, Smaev continues to demonstrate a level of strength that most can only dream of achieving.
