Eddie Hall has revealed how his first encounter with Hollywood superstar Jason Statham took an unexpected turn after the actor reacted in a way he never could have imagined.
The former World’s Strongest Man has crossed paths with some of the biggest names in entertainment throughout his career, but one meeting in particular left a lasting impression.
And surprisingly, it wasn’t Hall who found himself starstruck.
Speaking to Charlie Parsons during an interview for The Stomping Ground, Hall opened up about his experiences meeting celebrities and revealed which famous faces had impressed him the most.
The conversation began with Parsons asking Hall about the most unpleasant celebrity he had encountered.
Hall named James Corden, claiming the television presenter had been dismissive towards him and others while they were working on the same set.
However, when the conversation turned to celebrities who had exceeded his expectations, Hall had a very different story to tell.
Asked whether there was someone famous he had been particularly impressed by after meeting them, Hall immediately named Jason Statham.
The strongman explained that their first encounter happened while filming Expendables 4, where he initially expected to go largely unnoticed by the Hollywood actor.
Despite his achievements in strongman and his considerable public profile, Hall assumed Statham would have little interest in speaking to him.
He recalled: “Cuz I first met him on the set of Expendables 4.”
Hall admitted that he had already convinced himself the actor wouldn’t recognise him, let alone know anything about his sporting career.
He said: “And I was like, he ain’t going to know where I am. He ain’t going to give a [ __ ] you know? It’s just going to be a [ __ ] you know, I’m just going to be like an extra in this.”
However, the reality couldn’t have been more different.
Rather than ignoring Hall, Statham reportedly made a beeline for the strongman as soon as he arrived on set.
Hall recalled: “And I walked into the set and he ran over to me really and was like, “Oh my god, Eddie Hall.””
What followed was even more surprising.
According to Hall, Statham was already familiar with his sporting background and began enthusiastically discussing his achievements.
The actor reportedly knew about Hall’s swimming career, his success in strongman and several of his personal accomplishments.
He was also keen to learn more about the training and nutrition required to build Hall’s extraordinary physique.
Hall explained that Statham began asking about his diet, bench press and other aspects of his strength training.
Instead of a brief celebrity introduction, the encounter developed into a lengthy conversation between the two men.
And it didn’t end there.
Hall revealed that the pair subsequently developed a genuine friendship, something he clearly hadn’t anticipated when he first walked onto the film set.
Reflecting on the experience, Hall admitted that the roles had effectively been reversed.
He said: “Um, so yeah, he he he almost fan fangled on me rather than the other way around.”
For someone who had expected to be treated like an extra, discovering that one of Hollywood’s most recognisable action stars was already a fan of his achievements came as a welcome surprise.
The encounter also stood in stark contrast to Hall’s earlier comments about his disappointing experience with Corden.
While he had criticised the television presenter for allegedly showing little interest in those around him, Statham had gone out of his way to make Hall feel welcome.
And judging by the way Hall recalled their first meeting, it was an interaction that left him with an enormous amount of respect for the actor.
Not only did Statham recognise the former World’s Strongest Man, but he also knew enough about his career to turn what could have been a brief introduction into the beginning of a friendship.
