A Michigan junior varsity football game descended into horror last week when a 15-year-old athlete suffered two fractures in his spine after a rival player launched his full body weight onto him in a shocking after-play incident.

The moment, caught on fan video, unfolded during the third quarter of a Thursday evening matchup between Lakeshore and Kalamazoo Central High Schools.

Footage shows a Lakeshore player tackling the teen, identified by his mother as Colton, as the teams tussled on the field. As Colton remained curled up on the ground, the opposing player stood over him, then leapt high into the air before crashing back down — pancaking the smaller athlete.

He was left motionless on the field before being carted away for emergency treatment.

Colton’s mother, Courtney Mims, raced onto the field when she realized her son was the one injured.

“As soon as it clicked that it was, I couldn’t be stopped. I had to go down there. I’ve never felt anything like it. I’ve never been as upset or shaken up as I was over something for my son,” she told WSBT.

Doctors confirmed two spinal fractures. Mims said her son was released on muscle relaxers but will miss the rest of the football season — and his long-term future in the sport remains uncertain.

“These boys are high school boys. They’re 15 years old. The game means a lot to them. It’s their whole life right now. They’re there from before I get up to go to work in the morning till after dinner, putting in the work and for somebody to try to take that from somebody doing so much is awful for me to see.”

The incident — which some fans compared to professional wrestling’s “frog splash” — has sparked outrage in the local community. Despite the severity of the injury, it remains unclear whether the opposing player will face punishment.

According to statements obtained by WSBT, the Michigan High School Athletic Association has left the matter to the two schools to “resolve internally.” No official disciplinary measures have been announced.

Mims told the outlet she expects her son to make a full recovery, though doctors have not confirmed if he will ever be cleared to play football again.

The following day, the varsity teams from the two schools met as scheduled. Kalamazoo Central stormed to a 26–7 victory — and dedicated the result to their injured teammate.

A post on social media read: “This one was for Colton.”

A further statement from school officials shared on Facebook read: “At Kalamazoo Central High School, we hold our student-athletes to high standards of sportsmanship, respect, and integrity on and off the field. An incident that occurred during the recent JV football game does not represent our football program, our coaching staff, or the values of our school community. This was the action of an individual student who made a poor choice, acting on a social media video not connected to our team or coaches.

“The behavior was addressed, and the student has received consequences consistent with the Kalamazoo Public Schools Student Code of Conduct and in compliance with MHSAA regulations.
We remain committed to modeling and teaching positive sportsmanship and ensuring that Kalamazoo Central continues to be a place where athletics build character, teamwork, and pride.”

Colton’s injury comes during a troubling season for high school football nationwide. In August, a teenager in Alabama died after suffering a head injury in his team’s season opener. In September, a 16-year-old in Los Angeles sustained a brain injury while making a tackle and passed away a week later.

While high school football is woven deeply into American culture, recent incidents highlight the dangers young athletes face — from inadequate safety protocols to violent plays that cross the line of competition.

For Colton and his family, the focus now is on recovery. For Michigan football, questions remain about how such an incident was allowed to unfold — and what accountability, if any, will follow. Our thoughts are with Colton and his loves ones during his recovery.
