There are moments that divide a life into before and after. For Brian Shaw, one of those moments came long before the world knew his name — on a mountain road, behind the wheel, with everything hanging in the balance.
Speaking candidly on a recent episode of his podcast, Shaw reflected on a harrowing car accident he experienced at just 16 years old, a moment that would leave a lasting imprint on how he approaches life, risk, and responsibility.
It was supposed to be a carefree trip. Fresh into his driving years, Shaw was out with his brother and friends, camping in the mountains. The setting was rugged — a dirt road carved into the landscape, surrounded by steep drops and unpredictable terrain. Nothing unusual for a group of teenagers enjoying the outdoors.
But in an instant, everything changed.
As Shaw described it, he wasn’t driving recklessly. The group were simply enjoying themselves when the conditions of the road took over. The truck began to bounce over rocks and loose dirt, and as he came around a bend, control slipped away.
What followed was the kind of scenario that rarely ends well.
The vehicle veered off the side of the mountain.
Shaw recalled the exact sequence with clarity — the front right corner of the truck struck a tree, an impact that somehow spun the vehicle around. In a twist of fate that still stands out to him today, the truck came to rest facing back up the mountain, stopped by another tree.
It was a sequence of events that, by his own admission, could have ended very differently.
Once the truck came to a halt, the group managed to get out. Miraculously, every single person walked away unharmed. But as Shaw stood there, looking at what had just happened, the reality of how close they had come to something far worse began to sink in.
He explained that many areas along that same mountain had no trees at all — just sheer drops. Had the truck gone off in one of those spots, there would have been no stopping it.
“There would be no return from that. Like it would have killed us all for sure,” he said.
It’s a stark admission, one that underscores just how narrow the margin was between survival and tragedy.
In that moment, the weight of it all hit him. Not just relief — but perspective.
Shaw admitted he walked away from the crash feeling “unbelievably thankful” to be alive, a feeling that has never truly left him. It wasn’t just about surviving the accident; it was about understanding how fragile situations can become without warning.
That experience didn’t fade into the background as time passed. Instead, it became a defining reference point.
From that day forward, Shaw’s mindset behind the wheel changed completely. What had once been routine became something he approached with heightened awareness and caution. The unpredictability of that moment — how quickly things spiralled despite no intention of danger — stayed with him.
He acknowledged that it’s the kind of event you never expect to happen to you. Until it does.
And when it does, it reshapes how you see everything.
Reflecting on it now, Shaw made it clear that the crash didn’t just influence how he drives — it altered his broader perspective on life. Situations can turn in an instant, and the line between control and chaos is often thinner than people realise.
It’s a story rooted not in his strength career or competitive achievements, but in something far more human — a moment of vulnerability, chance, and survival that continues to shape the man behind the titles.
And years later, that feeling remains unchanged: “unbelievably thankful.”
