At 80 years old, Ernie Hudson continues to leave fans doing a double take.
Whether he’s appearing on screen or stepping onto a red carpet, the Ghostbusters star has become known not only for his enduring acting career but also for looking remarkably youthful decades after first becoming a Hollywood icon. His appearance regularly sparks admiration, yet Hudson insists there isn’t a miracle solution behind it all.
Instead, the veteran actor credits years of paying close attention to what his body needs, making thoughtful adjustments along the way rather than chasing fitness trends or following rigid routines.
“Over the years, I’ve always been aware that you have to tune into your body and you have to pay attention—your body will tell you what it needs,” Hudson explained, via Men’s Health. “You just have to quiet your mind enough to listen.”
That philosophy has shaped the way Hudson approaches both health and fitness as he enters what he describes as a stage of life he never expected to reach.
Now in his ninth decade, Hudson says growing older has naturally made him more aware of the health challenges that often come with age. Rather than fearing them, he’s focused on doing everything possible to remain active, capable and independent for as long as possible.
“Weight becomes a big issue the older you get especially if you’re from my community, the African American community,” he said. “Every disease known to man seems to hit us harder.”
For Hudson, maintaining good health has never been about aesthetics alone. His priorities are much more practical.
He wants to remain mobile, flexible and confident moving around without worrying about losing his balance or suffering falls that become increasingly common later in life.
That long-term outlook has influenced the way he trains.
Rather than spending countless hours in the gym every day, Hudson follows a consistent routine that supports strength, mobility and overall function.
The actor works with a personal trainer two or three times each week while he’s in Los Angeles. His filming schedule regularly takes him across the country, including projects such as Boston Blue and The Family Business, but he doesn’t allow travel to derail his workouts.
When away from home or spending time in New York, Hudson instead trains alongside his son, Ernest, keeping the routine consistent wherever work takes him.
The pair recently demonstrated one of Hudson’s typical upper-body training sessions, offering a closer look at the exercises that have helped him stay strong into his 80s.
Every session begins with a simple warm-up designed to prepare the body for heavier work.
Hudson starts with bodyweight squats before transitioning into elevated plank walkouts to activate multiple muscle groups and increase mobility.
From there, the main workout focuses on building upper-body strength through a selection of classic compound and isolation exercises.
His routine includes:
Pushups
Seated rows
Barbell bench press
Concentration curls
Triceps pressdowns
The workout reflects Hudson’s wider approach to longevity—prioritising functional strength rather than simply lifting heavier weights.
Strong arms and a resilient upper body are particularly important to him as he continues working well into his eighth decade while maintaining the mobility needed for everyday life.
Rather than promising shortcuts or secret formulas, Hudson’s philosophy is built around consistency, listening to his body and adapting as his needs change with age.
It’s an approach that has allowed him to continue acting, travelling and training while inspiring plenty of admiration from fans who continue to marvel at just how little he seems to have changed over the years.
