Some strength challenges are difficult enough to defeat even the most experienced athletes, but one woman has joined an incredibly exclusive club after conquering one of Scotland’s most legendary tests of strength.

Angelica Jardine has become only the second woman ever to lift the famous Dinnie Stones side by side, successfully raising a combined weight of approximately 733lbs (332kg).

The remarkable achievement places Jardine among a select group of athletes to have completed one of the most recognisable feats in traditional strongman history.

And unlike a conventional deadlift, the Dinnie Stones present a particularly unusual challenge.

The two enormous granite stones are fitted with metal rings, which competitors must grip to lift them from the ground.

However, the stones are far from identical.

The larger weighs approximately 188kg, while the smaller comes in at around 144kg, creating an uneven load that makes the challenge particularly demanding.

Their awkward shape, considerable weight and unforgiving handles mean that lifting them requires far more than simply having a strong deadlift.

Grip strength is especially important, with competitors forced to maintain control of both stones while attempting to raise them simultaneously.

The stones take their name from legendary Scottish Strongman Donald Dinnie, who famously lifted them in 1860.

According to the traditional account, Dinnie lifted the stones and carried them across the width of the Potarch Bridge in Aberdeenshire.

The achievement became one of the most celebrated feats in Scottish strength folklore, with generations of strongmen subsequently attempting to replicate his extraordinary display.

More than 160 years later, the stones remain a formidable challenge.

Their reputation has attracted some of the strongest athletes in the world, yet successfully lifting both stones continues to be regarded as a significant achievement.

For Jardine, joining the small number of women to have accomplished the feat represents a remarkable milestone.

Her achievement is particularly notable because the side-by-side lift requires the athlete to manage the two stones simultaneously, rather than lifting them individually.

It is a challenge that tests grip, balance and full-body strength in a way that few conventional gym exercises can replicate.

While modern strength sports frequently feature enormous barbells and specially designed equipment, the Dinnie Stones remain a reminder of the sport’s traditional roots.

And with Jardine now adding her name to their history, the legendary Scottish stones have provided another extraordinary moment in the world of strength.
