Eddie Hall has revealed how an unpleasant encounter with a fellow airline passenger ended up working massively in his favour after she refused to sit next to him because of his enormous size.

The former World’s Strongest Man has spent much of his life dealing with the everyday challenges that come with being considerably bigger than the average person.

While his incredible physique helped him reach the pinnacle of strongman, it also made ordinary activities, such as travelling on planes and fitting into cars, surprisingly difficult.

However, one particular experience aboard a flight ended with Hall getting the last laugh after a woman complained about having to sit beside him.

Speaking to Charlie Parsons during an interview for The Stomping Ground, Hall opened up about the difficulties he encountered as his weight increased throughout his strongman career.

Hall explained that it wasn’t until his early twenties that his size began to seriously interfere with everyday life.

By the age of 22, he was already weighing approximately 22 stone, making activities that most people take for granted increasingly uncomfortable.

One of his biggest disappointments was discovering that he could no longer enjoy theme parks with his friends.

Hall had previously loved visiting amusement parks, but his growing physique eventually meant he was unable to fit into many of the rides.

Rather than joining his mates on the attractions, he would find himself waiting at the bottom while everyone else enjoyed themselves.

But while missing out on rollercoasters was frustrating, travelling by plane presented an entirely different set of problems.

During the interview, Parsons asked Hall whether he had ever experienced a particularly unpleasant reaction from someone seated next to him on a flight.

The strongman immediately recalled an incident involving a woman who was so unhappy about the seating arrangement that she demanded he be moved.

Hall said: “I had a woman once, I mean she was a big lady who just like point blank would not sit next to me like get this man off the plane really.”

According to Hall, the passenger believed he should have purchased an additional seat rather than expecting someone else to sit beside him.

He recalled her saying: “He should have brought two tickets. This is unfair.”

The situation left Hall feeling publicly humiliated, with the complaints being made in front of other passengers.

He explained: “Like proper fat shame me in front of like loads of people.”

However, what initially appeared to be an embarrassing situation soon took an unexpected turn.

Rather than making Hall leave the aircraft or forcing him to purchase another ticket, airline staff found a solution that ended up benefiting the strongman.

Hall revealed: “And they ended up putting me into business class.”

The woman, meanwhile, remained in economy.

Parsons was quick to point out that Hall had ultimately emerged from the incident as the winner.

And when asked whether he had made any gesture towards the woman after receiving his unexpected upgrade, Hall admitted that he had kept his reaction relatively restrained.

He said: “No, just a little smirk. just like a little, you know, a sort of thanks for that.”

Although Hall’s size became one of his greatest assets during his sporting career, it also created obstacles that extended far beyond the gym.

And while the encounter was clearly unpleasant at the time, the unexpected business-class upgrade meant Hall was ultimately able to look back on the incident with a sense of humour.
